Wishaw and Shotts

National  Youth Work Week 2018 Programme

World War 1 film project launch

This exciting film project involves youth work staff supporting the four High Schools in the Wishaw and Shotts Locality of North Lanarkshire Council. Coltness, St Aidans, Clyde Valley and Calderhead High School. They each have contributed young people and staff towards making a film about the heroic exploit of William Angus VC.

William Angus was awarded his Victoria Cross for saving the life of his Commanding Officer Lt. James Martin in June 1915. Corporal Angus sustained over forty injuries, famously remarking to King George V. that "only thirteen of which were serious ". There is a local connection to William Angus as he lived in nearby Carluke and played football for Wishaw Thistle FC.

Peter Buxton, William Angus's Grandson advised on the story of William Angus, before, during and after The Great War and the film script dramatises these events both as part of WW1 Commemorations and 2018 Year of Young People. Prior to filming,  Ian Anderson and Gordon Swinton were interviewed by Steven Jardine on the BBC Steven Jardine Show during which two of our young people spoke enthusuaistically about their involvement in the Project.

Funding for this project has been awarded by The Heritage Lottery Fund and film locations were agreed with 'Diggin In' Pollok Park Glasgow, 'Summerlee Heritage Centre' and 'Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway' with fiming taking place during the week beginning 20th August.

A special Commemorative evening for the Anniversary of the ending of the First World War and 2018 Year of Young People is being held in Motherwell Theatre on Wednesday 31st of October. ( tickets are by invitation only )during which young people from the four High Schools will perform music and poetry and the evening will culminate with the showing of the Film " The Willie Angus Story " - ' The Bravest Act of The War '
